The Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) accredits both public and non-public schools that choose to seek accreditation under law. IDOE has issued accreditation ratings for 2,114 Indiana public and non-public schools for the 2010-2011 academic year. Private schools are not required to be accredited by IDOE.
The accreditation status is predominantly determined by performance for the previous academic year as determined by the by Public Law 221 provisions. Additionally, compliance with legal standards established for accredited schools by Indiana statute or regulations of the Indiana State Board of Education is also considered.
